Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Trophy Guide & Roadmap (PS5)

metal gear solid 4 trophy guide & roadmap

Welcome to the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Trophy Guide & Roadmap!

This first thing to know about this Trophy list is that it is very collectible heavy and will require a lot of playthroughs in order to complete. The original Metal Gear Solid 4 was patched with trophies four years after the game was released which was when developers were still figuring these lists out. It’s a pretty uninspired and grindy list. There are a few miscellaneous trophies to grab. They are missable, but if you’re going for the Platinum here, you’ll be replaying the game several times. So, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to clean up the miscellaneous stuff.

Before we get started in the order of playthroughs, Metal Gear Solid 4 is the end of the Metal Gear Solid series. If you are at all interested in the story of this series, I would recommend making your first playthrough something that will allow you to explore the game more organically and take in the story. If you aren’t interested, then feel free to dive right in however you’d like.

Collectibles

There are a lot of collectibles to find here. They will all carry over to your next playthrough as long as you are staying on your completed game save file. So, if anything is missed, it can be collected on one of your following playthroughs. Some of the collectibles won’t be able to be collected in a single playthrough anyway. There are a couple of iPod Tracks and FaceCamos that are locked behind earning the Big Boss emblem.

The cutscene flashbacks are going to force you to watch just about every cutscene in the game. There are a lot. But you should not skip any of them until you have the trophy for viewing them all. Flashbacks are marked by an X prompt in the top right corner of the screen. There are two that are hidden, but they will be pointed out in the collectible guide. When you see the prompt, just keep tapping X until the flashback stops. You want to make sure to see each one. They will also reward you with Drebin Points. This is something to focus on during your Chicken playthrough. More on that below.

Emblems?!

The most important thing to know here is that you will need to be playing each of your playthroughs in very specific ways. This is so that you can earn all 40 emblems. Emblems are awards given to you after beating the game. Each one will have a set of objectives that you need to complete in order to earn them. The Cow emblem, for example, is earned by getting over 100 alerts in a single playthrough. Fortunately, you can earn multiple emblems per playthrough. So, you’re going to want to stack as many as you can per playthrough. Unfortunately though, there are emblems that cancel each other out. So, this is where the grind is going to come from. You’ll need to dedicate playthroughs to reaching certain emblems. The full list of emblems and their requirements can be found at the bottom of this guide (Emblem Requirements). After beating an act, you’ll be given a score for that act. That will help you know how far along you are with certain emblems as long as you know what your goals are.

If you are looking to be as efficient as possible with your playthroughs, it will take a minimum of eight playthroughs to earn them all. Below is a list of how the playthroughs are broken down by emblem. This is not a recommended order. That is up to how you want to do it. Although, I would recommend saving the Big Boss emblem run for last. That one has the more extreme requirements. But if you’ve unlocked all of the other emblems, you will be very familiar with the game and have everything you need unlocked for that Big Boss run.

Emblems that require their own playthrough due to cancelling each other out:

Playthroughs where emblems can be stacked:

Making the emblems listed above your main goal for each playthrough will bring with them, other emblems. Specifically, your Chicken playthrough can earn you a lot of other emblems. This run is going to be sloppy, but it has to be as those are the requirements. You’re going to need to beat the game in OVER 35 hours. A reverse speed run. So, you’ll want to use that run to focus on collectibles and weapons as well. There are a lot, and that run is perfect for taking time to collect everything. Cutscenes will add to your timer. One of the collectibles, the flashbacks, will require you to basically watch them all, so that will be a nice chunk of time added.

In addition to the collectibles and weapons, you will also want to knock out the other time based emblems on that run. There are a handful of emblems that require you to perform a certain action for a set amount of time. So make sure to get those all done on your Chicken playthrough. Look to earn the following emblems on your Chicken playthrough:

Chicken Playthrough

  • Chicken
    • Alerts: Over 150
    • Kills: Over 500
    • Continues: Over 50
    • Time: Over 35 Hours

The game is not long, so you’re really going to have to stretch it out to reach 35+ hours. Completing the emblems above as well as collectibles will help you pad some time.

The Big Boss playthrough will also earn you the following emblems:

This is an unmissable story related Trophy.

Solid Sun

Cleared Act 2 (South America).

This is an unmissable story related Trophy.

Third Sun

Cleared Act 3 (Eastern Europe).

Old Sun

You enjoy all the killing, that’s why.

Killed many enemies in one area, and vomited.

MISSABLE

In order to earn this, you’re going to need to kill 50 enemies while in the same area. It’s important that you do this in the same area. It’s not 50 kills over the course of the entire game. It must be all 50 while in the same place. The first two acts are the best places to try and earn this Trophy. Unless you have a manual save that you can reload afterwards, this Trophy should be earned during a playthrough where you’re already planning to earn the high-kill emblems.

You can kill both the PMC soldiers, as well as the rebel forces for this. Once you’re in alert mode, the enemies will keep spawning. So just make sure to kill them as they come. Continue killing them until Snake has flashback of Liquid telling him that he enjoys all the killing. Snake will throw up and the Trophy will pop. Remember, do not progress any further into the level you’re on when you start to go for this Trophy.

A good place to go for this is the Vista Mansion in Act 2. As long as you don’t enter the objective area behind the mansion, the enemy PMC soldiers will infinitely spawn.

Laughing Octopus Doll

Defeated Laughing Octopus by non-lethal means, and obtained the Laughing Octopus Doll.

MISSABLE

Laughing Octopus is the boss you will fight during Act 2. In order to get the Laughing Octopus Doll, you’re going to need to beat her by using non-lethal weapons that deplete her psyche bar. That is the bar under her health. Do not drain her health bar all the way. Just avoid using lethal weapons all together and only stick with non-lethal ones. When the fight is over and you’re in the beauty phase, do not finish her off. You will need to first go into the lab and and pick up this doll on the bed. Pick up the doll before finishing her.

Frog Soldier Doll

Escaped the Haven Troopers in the Middle East by non-lethal means, and obtained the Frog Soldier Doll.

MISSABLE

The Haven Troopers are the “boss” you will fight during Act 1. This will be a group of Frog soldiers you need to fight through as you escape the building. In order to get the Frog Soldier Doll, you’re going to need to beat them by using non-lethal weapons. Just avoid using lethal weapons all together and only stick with non-lethal ones. It is okay if Meryl’s team kills them, it just can’t be you. When the fight is over and you’re in the garage, make sure to pick up this doll before leaving.

Raging Raven Doll

Defeated Raging Raven by non-lethal means, and obtained the Raging Raven Doll.

MISSABLE

Raging Raven is the boss you will fight during Act 3. In order to get the Raging Raven Doll, you’re going to need to beat her by using non-lethal weapons that deplete her psyche bar. That is the bar under her health. Do not drain her health bar all the way. Just avoid using lethal weapons all together and only stick with non-lethal ones. When the fight is over and you’re in the beauty phase, do not finish her off. You will need to first go to the top of the tower and and pick up this doll. Pick up the doll before finishing her.

Crying Wolf Doll

Defeated Crying Wolf by non-lethal means, and obtained the Crying Wolf Doll.

MISSABLE

Crying Wolf is the boss you will fight during Act 4. In order to get the Crying Wolf Doll, you’re going to need to beat her by using non-lethal weapons that deplete her psyche bar. That is the bar under her health. Do not drain her health bar all the way. Just avoid using lethal weapons all together and only stick with non-lethal ones. When the fight is over and you’re in the beauty phase, do not finish her off. Turn around from where you regain control to find the doll directly behind you. Pick up the doll before finishing her.

Screaming Mantis Doll

Defeated Screaming Mantis by non-lethal means, and obtained the Screaming Mantis Doll.

MISSABLE

Screaming Mantis is the boss you will fight during Act 5. This boss fight will go a little differently than the others. You will need to take the dolls that she is using as weapons against you from her. They will be hanging off of her. Shoot them enough times and they will eventually fall off. When they do, you need to quickly pick them up. In order to beat her, you need to use the Psycho Mantis doll against her. Doing so will drain her health and stamina at the same time. This will not count as a kill. When the fight is over and you’re in the beauty phase, do not finish her off. Return to the hallway where you originally entered the computer room and search the hallway on the lower level to find the Screaming Mantis Doll lying on the floor. Pick up the doll before finishing her. If you’re on a no kill run, make sure to only use non-lethal weapons against her in the beauty phase.

Divine Wind

Caused a “divine wind” using the Tanegashima.

The Tanegashima is a weapon that is sold by Drebin. It will cost 1,000,000 Drebin Points during Acts 1 – 4. During Act 5, the Tanegashima will be on sale for 500,000 Drebin Points. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the Tanegashima can be bought for 800,000 Drebin Points. Once you have the weapon, there will be about a 30% chance that the gun will create a powerful tornado when you shoot it while outside. The tornado instantly kills all nearby enemies. You just need to keep firing this weapon until the tornado appears after the shot. Drebin Points are earned by picking up weapons. As you make your way through the game, make sure you are picking up weapons you find on the ground for the Drebin Points. You will also earn them by having a good score at the end of each act. The better your score, the more points you’ll earn. No Continues, no Alerts, no kills, no recovery items used, no special items used and watching the flashbacks will earn you a good chunk of points.

Handle with Caution

Broke off the most important part of a statue.

MISSABLE

This is earned in Act 1 shortly after the beginning of the game while making your way toward Otacon for the Mk. II. Progress through Act 1 until you enter the Red Zone. Near the entrance, you’ll see a raised platform with two statues and an opening for a third. Climb up onto the statue and press to pose with the statue. Snake will break a piece of the statue and pop the Trophy. Don’t hold it, you just need to press it.

Hands Up!

Held an enemy soldier at gunpoint and performed a body check.

In order to earn this Trophy, you’re going to have to sneak up behind a lone enemy. Make sure to crouch walk up behind them. Once you’re close enough, hold to aim your weapon at the enemy to hold them up. Once you’re holding him up, let go of and get in front of them. Press to do a body check on the enemy when the prompt appears. Make sure to press  each time the prompt appears in order to take the potential items from the enemy.

Flashback Mania

Viewed all flashbacks.

MISSABLE

The cutscene flashbacks are going to force you to watch just about every cutscene in the game. There are a lot. But you should not skip any of them until you have the trophy for viewing them all. Flashbacks are marked by an X prompt in the top right corner of the screen. There are two that are hidden, but they will be pointed out in the guide below. When you see the prompt, just keep tapping X until the flashback stops. You want to make sure to see each one and they will reward you with Drebin Points.

See the Metal Gear Solid 4 Collectible Guide for more information.

SUNLIGHT!

Obtained the Solar Gun.

MISSABLE

In order to obtain the Solar Gun, you’re going to need to collect all five of the dolls from the bosses across the game.

In order to get the dolls, you will need to beat each of the bosses non-lethally. There are two phases to the boss fights against the bosses. After you beat the first phase of the boss fight non-lethally, the second phase will begin. You will need to find and pick up the doll during the second phase. If you don’t, they’ll be missed. So, grab the dolls before finishing the second phase of the fights.

Once you have all five of the dolls, you’ll automatically be given the Solar Gun after you see your score for beating the game.

Sounds of the Battlefield

Obtained all iPod® tracks (excluding tracks obtained via password).

MISSABLE

See the Metal Gear Solid 4 Collectible Guide for more information.

I Just Don’t Fear Death

Ended ALERT status while wearing the Corpse Camo.

Before you can go for this Trophy, you’re going to need to earn the Chicken Emblem. You need 51 continues in order to unlock the Corpse Camo, but this also how many are needed for the Chicken Emblem. Once you’ve beaten the game with at least 51 Continues, make sure to save your completed file. Then, load that file for your next playthrough and you’ll have the Corpse Camo. Once you have the camo, you’ll need to enter the alert phase. Run from the enemy and break their line of sight. Go prone and press Triangle to lay flat with the camo equipped and lay there until the alert phase ends.

v

I am THE expert on weapons

Obtained all weapons (excluding weapons obtained via password).

See the Metal Gear Solid 4 Collectible Guide for more information.

Infinite ammo

Obtained the Bandana.

MISSABLE

The Bandana is unlocked by beating the game without killing any of the human enemies. You can kill the robot enemy types. It can also be bought from Drebin for 5,000,000 Drebin Points. If you’re going for the Platinum, there are emblems that will require you to not kill any enemies, so this is something that will come as you make your way through this Trophy list. There are a lot of non-lethal weapon in the game, so make sure to only use those. These are the blue colored weapons in the inventory.

Stealth Camouflage

Obtained the Stealth Camouflage.

MISSABLE

The Stealth Camouflage is unlocked by beating the game without triggering any Alert modes. It can also be bought from Drebin for 5,000,000 Drebin Points. If you’re going for the Platinum, there are emblems that will require you to have 0 alerts, so this is something that will come as you make your way through this Trophy list. Make sure to take areas slow and make use of the threat ring. Only use suppressed weapons and keep current saves. If you’re spotted, reload your most recent save to try the area again.

Ghost Photography Addict

Snapped at least 5 shots of ghosts on Shadow Moses Island.

MISSABLE

There are more than 5 ghosts in Shadow Moses, but only 5 are needed for the trophy. So the first 5 will be listed below. The ghost will flash and appear in your picture as soon as you take it as long as you were aiming in the correct location. You’ll also need to find the camera. This can be found during any of the first 4 mission briefings. You will need to take control of the MK. II and drive around the briefing to pick up the camera. It will be in a different location depending on what briefing you’re in. The area is small, so it won’t be too hard to find. It can be upstairs by where Sunny is cooking as well as behind Sunny’s desk on the bottom level.

FaceCamo Addict

Obtained 10 or more types of FaceCamo (excluding types obtained via password).

There are 14 types of FaceCamo, so you don’t need them all for this Trophy. The majority of the FaceCamos will be earned as you complete the rest of this Trophy list. So this is something that will come as you complete other Trophy related objectives. The FaceCamos are listed below:

Can you feel my power now!!!?

Took control of an enemy soldier’s body using the Mantis Doll or Sorrow Doll.

Both of the dolls can be acquired during the fight against Screaming Mantis in Act 5. She will have the two dolls floating next to her. You need to keep shooting these dolls until they are dropped. Once they are dropped, quickly get to them to pick them up. After that, you’ll need to finish the game and start up a new playthrough on your completed save. Equip one of the two dolls, the Mantis Doll will control living enemies and the Sorrow Doll will control dead ones. Use either of them. Aim at an enemy and fire the doll as if it were a gun to control them.

Emotion Control

Controlled an enemy soldier’s emotions using an Emotive Magazine.

Emotive Magazines can be bought from Drebin starting in Act 2. These are magazines that you can lay down on the ground to distract patrolling enemies. Each of the magazines will have one of the Beauties bosses on them. Whichever one is on it, will correspond to their emotion. So if you lay down Raging Raven, it will send the enemy that looks at it into a rage. All you have to do is lay one of these magazines down on an enemy’s path and wait for them to walk up to it and look at it. This can be done against the PMC enemies or the rebels.

Hurt me more!

Shocked an enemy soldier using Mk. II/III.

The Mk. II will become available in Act 1, after meeting with Otacon. Afterwards, it’ll be available to use from the items menu. The Mk. III will be available later on in the game, but will work the same way as Mk. II. All you need to do is equip it and drive toward an enemy and then use it to shock the enemy. You can activate stealth on the Mk. II so that you are not seen approaching the enemy.

Drum Can Addict

Knocked an enemy soldier flying using a Drum Can.

The Drum Can is obtained as part of the story early in Act 1. Once you have it, it can be equipped and used just like every other item you pick up. When you equip it, you’ll automatically hide underneath it. While in it, press to tip over and start rolling. All you need to do here is roll into an enemy to earn this Trophy.

Crop Circle

Found a crop circle and heard a mysterious voice.

MISSABLE

This is earned during Act 2 after the boss fight with Laughing Beauty. As you follow Naomi’s trail, you’ll eventually come to a stream of water that you will need to cross. Before crossing that water, go left to the mountain wall and look left again to find the crop circle. You can also reach it by going left just before reaching the actual stream. If you walk through the water and cross over, you’ve gone too far. Walk into the circle to hear a flash back from Campbell which will pop the Trophy.

Are you an Otaku too?

Viewed all model posters.

MISSABLE

There are four model posters to find. Two of them are found in Act 2 in the Vista Mansion and the other two are found in Act 3. You need to stare at them until you hear Snake say, “Akina.” If you can’t get him to say it, use the Solid Eye and look at them through the SE Mode (first person view). You can zoom in and out to try and register the poster.

See the Metal Gear Solid 4 Collectible Guide for more information.

You’re pretty good.

Got kissed by Ocelot during the final battle.

MISSABLE

This Trophy is earned during the Snake Eater section of the boss fight against Ocelot in Act 5. You’ll need to let Ocelot grab hold of Snake from behind. Do not escape the hold. Instead, just wait and don’t press anything. Ocelot will kiss Snake while he has him held.

That Tune Is His Mind Control Music

Played Oishii Two-han Seikatsu and made one of the BB Corps dance.

MISSABLE

You will start the game with the Oishii Two-han Seikatsu track already in your iPod. You’ll have four opportunities to earn this Trophy per playthrough. After beating the beast form of the bosses, there will be a short section where you need to finish them off in their beauty forms. Instead of finishing them off, wait. Don’t attack them and just stay away from them. The screen will lose color and will eventually fade away completely until it is all white. It will take a few minutes. Once it does, equip your iPod and play the Oishii Two-han Seikatsu track to make the boss dance. You only need to do this one time.

Overhead view – just like old times…

Used overhead view on Shadow Moses Island.

MISSABLE

This can be earned on the Helipad outside of Shadow Moses. While standing on the Helipad, tilt the camera so that is overhead and looking down on Snake. Take a few steps until the memory plays and the Trophy pops.

LIQUID!

Piloted Metal Gear REX and screamed at your enemy.

MISSABLE

This is earned during Act 4 during the boss fight against the two Metal Gears. While piloting Rex, hold to make Rex roar which will pop the Trophy.

Cover-to-Cover Solid 4:Books of the Patriots

Read all the pages in the Screenplay Book

The Master Collection comes with Screenplay books for each of the games. These can be accessed from the menu when starting the game up. Open the Screenplay Book for Peace Walker and tab through all of the pages to the end and this will pop.

Emblem Requirements

Below is a list of all 40 emblems what the requirements are for each one. In order to get the Platinum trophy here, you’re going to need to earn every single one of them. The good news here is that you can earn multiple emblems per playthrough. The bad news, is that it will take at least eight playthroughs if you were to maximize your emblem efficiency. So, you’re in for a grind here.

In order to earn an emblem, you’re going to need to complete the required tasks listed below in one playthrough. Obviously, some of these are going to cancel each other out. That’s why it is going to take eight playthroughs minimum to get them all.

Big Boss

Fox Hound

Fox

Hound

Mantis

Wolf

Raven

Octopus

Bear

Eagle

Assassin

For this, you need to grab enemies just like with Bear, but here, you will also need to be using your knife to either kill or stun enemies. You will also need to be careful to not to be spotted as there is a limit to how many alerts you can have.

Pigeon

Blue Bird

For this, you will need to equip Rations, Compress, Noodles or Regain and then give it to the Militia/Rebel soldiers in Acts 1 and 2. Gift them at least 50 items.

Hawk

Help the Militia/Rebels in their battles with the PMC soldiers. You’ll want to use non-lethal weapons. You will also want to be near friendly soldiers as you fight. You can farm this in Act 2 – Vista Mansion. As long as you don’t progress to the objective, the PMC soldiers will infinitely spawn here. Stay near the rebels and knock out PMC soldiers.

Little Grey

See the Metal Gear Solid 4 Collectible Guide for weapon locations

Ant

When you hold up an enemy, you can press the action button to pat them down and take items from them.

Gibbon

Tortoise

This will count your cumulative time over the course of the whole game. It can be done all at once, but it does not have to be. You can chip away at it. Equip either the box or the drum, and just wait.

Rabbit

Equip the Playboy, and then go into first person view to look at the magazine. Then, press Circle to flip through the pages.

Bee

Equip the Syringe, hold up an enemy and then grab them. Press the action button to inject them with the syringe while you are holding them.

Gecko

Get close to walls and then press the action button to press up against them. Doing so will change Snake’s octo camo. You need to stay like that for at least an hour. This will count your cumulative time over the course of the whole game. It can be done all at once, but it does not have to be. You can chip away at it.

Scarab

In order to perform a side roll, you need to be laying down prone. Then, aim your weapon. While aiming your weapon, hold either left or right and press X. You need to rollover one time, stop, and then roll again. The game will count a continuous roll as only 1, so you need to make sure you are stopping and resetting your position after each side ways roll.

Frog

All you need to do here is roll by pressing X while you’re running (standing up). You’ll likely get a lot of these done without having to go too far out of your way.

Inch Worm

All you need to do here is lay down prone for an hour. This will count your cumulative time over the course of the whole game. It can be done all at once, but it does not have to be. You can chip away at it.

Lobster

When standing up, press X to crouch. You’ll likely earn a lot of time toward this without having to go too far out of your way. This will count your cumulative time over the course of the whole game. It can be done all at once, but it does not have to be. You can chip away at it.

Hyena

All you have to do here is pick up everything you come across. When enemies drop weapons, make sure to pick them up.

Hog

Continuously fire your weapon during alert phases. You can track your stress in the upper right corner under your health.

Pig

You can use Rations, Noodles or Regain

Cow

This is going to be the opposite of stealth. Run out in front of enemies and use weapons without suppressors.

Crocodile

Giant Panda

Scorpion

Tarantula

Centipede

Spider

Jaguar

Panther

Leopard

Puma

Chicken
