Red Dead Redemption Trophy Guide (2023)

red dead redemption trophy guide

Welcome to the Red Dead Redemption Trophy guide!

This guide covers the original base game of just Red Dead Redemption. Although Undead Nightmare is included in the base game Trophy list, it has not been included in the guide below. You will need to complete all of the Undead Nightmare Trophies in order to earn the Platinum.

Undead Nightmare has its own Trophy guide that can be found by following the link below.

6/10 Estimated Difficulty – Not so much difficult, but it is a grind.
55 – 70 Estimated Hours to Completion
1 Minimum Playthrough
1 Missable Trophy

Solo Cowboy

The PlayStation 4 version of the game does not have multiplayer. That means all of the multiplayer Trophies have been removed and everything here is done in single player. That does drop the difficulty quite a bit, but it is still going to require a lot of your time to complete.

Story Time

The first thing you’re going to want to focus on here is getting through the story while using the same horse for at least 20 missions. That is the only missable Trophy here. You’re going to want to try and limit and side or open world content until you have earned that Trophy. This is just to keep the risk of losing your horse low.

In addition to the missable Trophy, some areas/missions/challenges are locked behind story progression.

When you have “Spurred on to Victory” out of the way, then you can feel free to branch out and explore more of this list and in the game.

Money Saving Tips

  • Turn in bounties alive
  • Have high honor. Prices will be cheaper the higher your honor.
  • Don’t use Stagecoaches for fast travel. Place a marker on your map and then put down a campfire. You can travel to your waypoint for free.
  • Sell animal parts after hunting.
  • Don’t waste money on ammo. You can replenish ammo buy walking over dead enemies as well interacting with chests in your properties.

Keep It 100

The biggest thing about this list is 100% completion. You’re going to have to do pretty much everything the game has to offer in order to earn this Platinum. Not only is attaining 100% required for the “Redeemed” Trophy, there are also many other Trophies tied to sub objectives of the 100% checklist.

So you’re going to want to save “Redeemed” for last. Work your way through the game completing the story, side missions, challenges and miscellaneous Trophies. Doing so will complete a pretty sizable chunk of the 100% requirements naturally.

 Legend of the West

You’ve become a true legend of the West!

 That Government Boy

Complete “Exodus in America”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 Land of Opportunity

Complete “The Assault on Fort Mercer”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 Sons of Mexico

Complete “The Gates of El Presidio”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 No More Fancy Words

Complete “An Appointed Time”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 A Savage Soul

Complete “At Home with Dutch”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 The Benefits of Civilization

Complete “And the Truth Will Set You Free”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 Into the Sunset

Complete “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed”.

This is an unmissable story-related Trophy.

 Nurture or Nature?

Complete “Remember My Family”.

This is the final mission of the game, but it is marked as a Stranger Mission.

After completing “The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed,” travel to Blackwater. The ? icon should appear in town. Interact with it to begin this mission.

 High Roller

Win over 2000 chips in a hand of Poker.

There are two ways of going about this.

  • The first involves the story mission, “Lucky in Love.” After completing the story mission, “Landon Ricketts Rides Again.”

Buy the house in Chuparosa and make a save before starting, “Lucky in Love.”

Start the mission and you’ll automatically be playing Poker. You’ll start with 1,000 chips.

Immediately go all in. The other NPCs will either fold or match you. If they match and you win, you’ll win 2,000 chips which will pop this Trophy.

If your hand loses, you can reload your save to try again. If everyone folds, you will have one more hand to play to try again. Go all in again.

Because this is a story mission, you will only have two hands to play before the mission advances. You can keep reloading until you get it.

  • The second method can be done in Blackwater at the High Stakes poker table. You will need to have unlocked the Gentleman’s Attire outfit before you can play at this table. Information on that can be found in the 100% Guide.

At this table, you start with 2,500 chips. By going all in, the other players will likely fold. This means that you will win the hand of 2,500 which will pop this Trophy right away.

 No Dice

Complete a game of Liar’s Dice without losing a single die.

You can play Liar’s Dice at any dice icon on the map.

The quickest way to get this would be to play Liar’s Dice at Thieves Landing for the stranger mission, “Lights, Camera, Action.”

If there are two people sitting at the table, you can use your lasso to tie one of them up. Carry him away and then sit, or wait for the other NPC to sit back down.

First, don’t bluff. Look at your dice and enter a bid of an exact number of how many you have. For example, if you have 2 4s, enter a bid of 2 4s.

The NPC will likely call your bluff. He very rarely strays from that strategy. When he calls the bluff, he’ll be wrong because you had the exact number you placed which will result in him losing a die.

The higher the count, the better because he won’t be able to raise it. He’ll default to calling a bluff. For example, if you roll 2 1’s and 3 5’s, enter the bid of 3 5s because there are more of them. Which would seem unlikely to your opponent.

Just keep repeating that until he loses all of his dice.

There is still some luck involved with this as he may enter a bid of his own. If he does, you’ll need to look at your dice and make a decision. Don’t call the bluff if you have a die/dice of the value he enters. Call the bluff if he says there is a high count of something you don’t have.

Remember, there is an element of RNG in this game, so it may not go according to plan right away. Keep trying and you’ll come through.

 What About Hand Grenades?

Get a ringer in a game of Horseshoes.

You can play Horseshoes at any horseshoe icon on the map .

In order to get this, you need to throw your horseshoe and have it land around the pole. It is going to take multiple tries to get this done.

This is mostly luck based, but there are a few things you do to help your chances.

First, hold to aim your throw. You want to try and line up your arm with the pole. Aim it so that your finger is point right at the pole.

red dead redemption trophy guide

To throw, you need to pull back the right stick and then push it up to determine the power of your throw. If you push it up too hard, there will be too much power behind the throw and it’ll go over. The opposite is true as well. Not enough power, and the throw won’t make it.

You want to try and press to release the horseshoe at or just below the middle white line on the gauge.

This really comes down to trying it out and feeling what is too strong or too weak. There is no-sure fire guaranteed way to hit it. With two throws per turn, use your first throw as a test to gauge it and make the adjustments for your second throw.

 Austin Overpowered

Complete Twin Rocks, Pike’s Basin, and Gaptooth Breach Hideouts.

As long as you have progressed to the required points in the story, these will automatically activate as you approach them. You’ll do main missions at these locations, but those do not count for this. You need to return after and do them.

This is something that you will do as you work toward getting 100% completion.

  • Pike’s Basin
    • Complete main mission, “Justice in Pike’s Basin.”

 Fightin’ Around the World

Knock someone out in melee in every saloon in the game.

There are 7 saloons that you need to travel to and fight in.

  • Armadillo
  • Thieves Landing
  • Rathskeller Fork
  • Chuparosa
  • Escalaera
  • Casa Madrugada
  • Blackwater

You can fast to travel to each town using your campfires.

Go inside the saloon in each town and fight somebody. Make sure you have your fists selected and not a weapon. Knock them out and move on to the next town.

You may want to save your game between knock outs as dying can erase progress toward this.

 Strange Things are Afoot

Complete a task for a Stranger.

See the “People are Still Strange” Trophy below for more details.

 People are Still Strange

Complete 15 tasks for Strangers.

There are 19 Stranger missions to be found across the map. Only 15 of them are needed for this Trophy, but all of them are needed in order to reach 100% completion.

These will appear on your map as ? icons as you get near them.

See the 100% Completion Guide for more details.

 Buckin’ Awesome

Break the Kentucky Saddler, the American Standardbred, and the Hungarian Half-bred.

In order to “break” a horse, you will need to first find it in the wild. Then, lasso it and get on. It will try to buck you off but you need to stay on. When you’ve stayed on long enough, it will eventually stop and the horse will then be broken.

The game will walk you through a tutorial on this early on in the story. You’ll actually break a Kentucky Saddler during that mission, but it will not count toward this Trophy. You will need to find one out in the wild.

The General Stores sell deeds for horses. The American Standardbred and Hungarian Half-bred will be marked as, “Not Available” until you break them. They will become available for purchase after you’ve broken them. So you can actually check the status of the deeds tp see if you’ve broken them.

The three different types can be found in the following locations:

  • Kentucky Saddler
    • These can be found in Cholla Springs as well as just southeast of Armadillo.
    • These horses are a very light tan with a blonde mane.

 Clemency Pays

Capture a bounty alive.

Bounties are acquired by interacting with skull icons in towns. Once you have one, you’ll need to go track down a criminal and either kill them or capture them.

In order to get this, you’re going to need to capture the bounty target. Do not kill him.

Before you can get to the leader, you’ll need to fight through the target’s gang first.

Use your lasso to capture the target and then hogtie him. Place him on the back of your horse and return to the nearest jail (it will be marked on the map) with the target to turn him and the bounty in.

 Dastardly

Place a hogtied woman on the train tracks, and witness her death by train

First, open your map and look to see where the train is currently at. It is a red/blue train icon. Get near where it is or to where it is headed.

After that, find a woman and use your lasso to hogtie her. Pick her up and put her on the back of your horse.

Get a little ahead of the train and then place the woman on the tracks and wait for the train to hit her.

Exquisite Taste

Purchase a rare weapon from a gunsmith.

There are 5 rare weapons to collect. Only one of them is needed for this Trophy, but you will need to buy them all in order to reach 100% completion.

These can be bought from the following Gunsmith locations:

  • Escalera
    • Lemat Revolver
    • Semi-Auto Shotgun
  • Blackwater
    • Mauser Pistol
    • Evans Repeater
    • Carcano Rifle

Prices for these weapons will be lower if you have high honor and higher if you have low honor.

 Bearly Legal

Kill and skin 18 grizzly bears.

Grizzly bears can be found up in Tall Trees and the western side of the Great Plains.

When you get there, just roam the area killing and skinning bears as they appear. They do spawn pretty frequently. Don’t forget that you need to skin them as well.

After killing some, make sure to set up a camp to save your game. If you’re killed, you’ll lose progress on this. So make sure you’re saving frequently.

You can track how many you’ve killed and skinned by pausing the game, Stats > Collectibles.

Be careful doing this with your horse. The bears can get on you quickly. They’ll kill you and your horse with ease. So, you may want to wait until you’ve earned “Spurred to Victory” before attempting this Trophy.

 He Cleans Up Well!

Obtain the Elegant Suit.

The Elegant suit will become available after you play your first game of Liar’s Dice or Poker. There will be a notification in the top left of the screen telling you it can now be purchased.

It can be bought from the tailor in Thieves Landing.

After buying it, you will need to press the TouchPad and select it from your Consumables to actually obtain it. Just buying it won’t be enough to pop this Trophy.

 More than a Fistful

Earn $10,000.

This is something that will pop over time as you work your way through the game to 100% completion.

This is actually cumulative. So, you do not need to have all $10,000 on you at the same time.

 Frontiersman

Obtain Legendary rank in any Ambient Challenge.

You will need to complete all of the Ambient Challenges in order to earn 100% completion.

See the 100% Completion Guide for more details.

 The Gunslinger

Score a headshot on any enemy using Expert targeting mode.

This can be earned at any point in the game.

Pause the game and select “Options” > “Config.” Select “Targeting Mode” and set it to expert. All this does is turn off the auto lock on. So, you’ll just need to manually aim at an enemy’s head here.

All you have to do after that is get a headshot on an enemy. This has to be an enemy that is already hostile to you. Such as an enemy in a mission or a bounty. You cannot earn this by initiating a fight with a civilian.

If an enemy hasn’t been alerted to you as you approach, sneak to a spot where you have a clear headshot on the unsuspecting enemy. The enemies on bounties won’t be alerted to you right away.

Making things even easier, Dead Eye can be used to help earn this as well.

Man of Honor / Chivalry’s Dead

Attain highest Fame rank and either highest Honor rank or lowest Honor rank.

There are two meters that are required for this. Your Fame rank and your Honor rank.

Both of these meters need to be maxed out.

  • Fame

Your Fame will only increase. You cannot lose any Fame. You will likely have this meter completely full by the time you finish the story and get 100% completion.

If for some reason you have not filled your fame meter, you can actually farm 100 fame points pretty quickly.

Travel to Casa Madrugada and equip the Elegant Suit. Next, go to the poker table and play. Wearing the Elegant Suit will allow you to cheat at poker. Get yourself caught cheating and you’ll have to duel. During the duel disarm your opponent by shooting the gun out of his had. Doing so will net you 100 fame points. You can repeat that to farm the rest of the points you’re missing.

  • Honor

Honor works a little different than Fame. You can lose Honor, but that doesn’t actually hurt your chances at this Trophy. The reason for that is that this meter can go both ways. You can have absolutely no honor. If the meter is full all the way to the left, you’ll be “dishonorable,” but that still counts toward this Trophy. That would be the lowest. You have to commit a lot of crimes in order to get your honor to the lowest rank.

You can increase your honor by doing good deeds, helping random people and completing missions.

If you’re going to do something that will go against whatever path you’re on, equip the bandana. Wearing the bandana will prevent you from gaining or losing honor.

 Gold Medal

Earn a Gold Medal Rank for a combat mission.

This might seem like something that can be missed, but you can actually replay missions after you’ve completed them. Pause the game and select, Stats > Misssions. Then, you can select whichever mission you’d like to replay.

This Trophy can easily be earned on the mission, “Old Swindler Blues.”

Cutscenes add to your time, so make sure to quickly skip those.

When you get control, you’ll be on wagon driving to an objective. On the way there, there will be 4 enemies that attack you.

For this, use Dead Eye to slow things down and get a headshot on each enemy. You want to get 100% accuracy here, so make sure to not shoot wildly. Line up a head shot in Dead Eye and pull the trigger. Do this for each of the 4 enemies.

With them dead, all you have to do is quickly get to the objective. Once you’ve made it, skip the cutscenes at the end of the mission to save on time.

There are three categories you need to hit in order to get Gold on this mission:

  • Time – 2:20 or below
  • Shot Accuracy – 100%
  • Headshots – 4

Fortunately, you do not have to do all three requirements at the same time. Although this mission is easy, you can replay it three times and focus on a single category if you’d like.

 Manifest Destiny

Kill the last buffalo in the Great Plains.

This cannot be fully completed until after you have completed the main story mission, “At Home with Dutch.”

There are 20 buffalo in the game. Prior to “At Home with Dutch,” there will only be 18 in the open world. During that mission, you’ll be riding with two NPCs and you’ll come across two buffalo. The two NPCs will comment on the buffalo. It is a story event to come across those 2 buffalo. So all 20 will then be available after that mission.

The buffalo do not respawn after killing them, so you’re going to have to kill all of them in order to earn this Trophy.

Travel to the Great Plains/Broken Tree area and you should come across the herd.

As you attack the herd, they’ll run away. Try to keep up with them, but it is possible for the remaining herd to de-spawn. If that happens, save your game at your property in Manzanita or Blackwater and return to the area. It may take a few saves, but the remaining herd will eventually show back up.

On the Trail of de Vaca

Uncover every location on the map.

For this, you don’t have to actually visit the locations to uncover them. You can earn this by buying all of the maps available.

After you’ve bought the maps, press the TouchPad and select each one of them. They will then be added to the world map. Just buying them is not enough. You need to select each one of them in your inventory.

Maps are bought from the General Stores in the following locations:

  • McFarlane’s Ranch
    • Hennigan’s Steed
  • Armadillo
    • Cholla Springs
    • Gaptooth Ridge
  • Thieves Landing
    • Rio Bravo
  • Chuparosa
    • Perdido
    • Diez Coronas
  • Escalera
    • Punta Orgullo – This is bought from the Gunsmith not General Store.
  • Manzanita Post
    • Tall Trees
  • Blackwater
    • Great Plains

 Friends in High Places

Use a pardon letter with more than $5000 bounty.

First, you’re going to need to make sure you have a pardon letter in your Touchpad inventory. If you don’t, you can get one by completing a hideout. Hideouts are needed for 100% completion as well as three individual Trophies.

When you have one, rack up a bounty of at least $5,000.

You can use your safehouses as protection when fighting the police or Marshalls to increase your bounty that much.

When you have a bounty of at least $5,000, go to a train station and interact with the clerk. Select the option to use a pardon letter to pay off your bounty.

 Redeemed

Attain 100% in the Game Completion stat.

See the 100% Completion guide for more details on this.

 Spurred to Victory

Complete 20 story missions without switching to a new horse at a hitching post.

MISSABLE

This is the only missable Trophy in the game. You need to keep the same horse with you for at least 20 story missions. This is something that you’ll want to start working on immediately.

You will get a Kentucky Saddler early on in the game as part of the story. It is recommended that you do this Trophy with that horse.

The most important things to remember are:

  • Do not hitch any horse up to a hitching post except for the one start with. Hitching a horse to a post makes that your default horse and will reset your counter for this. It is recommended to stay away from hitching posts all together.
  • Do not take any horse from a hitching post. If you the story is asking you to do so, whistle for your own horse and use that instead.
  • Do not let your horse die. If it dies, your counter will be reset as you will need to get a new horse.
  • Do not use any horse deeds. Using a deed will change your default horse.
  • Breaking the horse with Bonnie during the story will not cancel this out. Although she tells you to keep the horse, it will not become your default horse as long as you don’t hitch it to a post.
  • Try to limit any side or open world content until you earn this. Doing extra content increases the chances of something happening to your horse.
  • Save your game often just in case something happens to your horse, you can reload a recent save file to get it back.

Heading South on a White Bronco

Evade the US Marshals while riding the Hungarian Half-Bred horse.

Before getting started, you may want to save your game in a new file. You’re going to be losing a lot of honor doing this. So make a separate save for this so that you don’t mess up your honor rank on your main save file.

First, you’ll need to get yourself a Hungarian Half-bred horse. These are found in Mexico just east of Escalera.

With that taken care of, start killing civilians and let a witness get away. Get near or in a house that you own and kill the police as they come. If you’re in your room, they will come to your door one by one and you can pick them off. Kill them all until there is no more.

Keep killing police until have a bounty of at least $1,000. When you do, keep saving your game in that separate file until you get a message that says the Marshalls are now after you. When you see that message in the top left of the screen, get on your horse and flee the radius. Keep going until you lose your wanted status. If you’re having trouble with that, you can cross the border into Mexico and it will instantly go away.

 Mowing Them Down

Kill 500 enemies with a mounted weapon in any game mode.

You can use the cannons or Gatling guns to earn this. You’ll get to use these throughout the story a few times, but you won’t get enough kills for this Trophy.

Instead, this can be sped up by playing Undead Nightmare. Go to El Presidio in Mexico and climb up via ladders to a cannon. You can sit up here shooting groups of zombies with the cannon until this pops.

 In a Hail of Bullets

Kill 500 enemies with any pistol or revolver in any game mode.

This is something that should pop as you work through the story and toward 100% completion. Just as long as you are using and pistol or revolver often.

An alternative method to unlocking this is by playing through Undead Nightmare on the horse, Death.

While riding Death, anything you run into will die and the kills will be counted toward whatever weapon you have out and equipped.

 Long Arm of Marston

Kill 500 enemies with any rifle, repeater, or shotgun in any game mode.

This is something that will pop as you work through the story and toward 100% completion. Just as long as you are using the required weapons.

An alternative method to unlocking this is by playing through Undead Nightmare on the horse, Death.

While riding Death, anything you run into will die and the kills will be counted toward whatever weapon you have out and equipped.

 Bullseye

Get 250 headshots in any game mode.

This is something that should pop as you work through the story and toward 100% completion. Always aim for the head during combat.

 Unnatural Selection

Kill one of every animal species in the game in any game mode.

There are 26 animals needed for this Trophy. You can keep track of which ones you’ve killed by pausing the game, Stats > Misc.

All you have to do is kill at least one of each of the following:

  • Armadillo
    • Cholla Springs, Gaptoth Ridge, Perdido
  • Bear
    • Tall Trees
  • Beaver
    • To the north along rivers. Must use a pistol to kill them.
  • Bighorn Sheep
    • Tall Trees, Manzanita Post
  • Boar
    • North Hennigan’s Stead
  • Bobcat
    • Tall Trees, Nuevo Paraiso
  • Buffalo
    • Great Plains
  • Cougar
    • Tall Trees, Great Plains, Beecher’s Hope
  • Coyote
    • McFarlane’s Ranch, Hennigan’s Stead
  • Crow
    • You’ll kill crows during the “Pestilence” main mission.
  • Deer
    • Tall Trees, Rio Bravo, Hennigan’s Stead, Cholla Springs
  • Duck
    • Lake Don Julio, San Luis River

  • Songbird
    • Found flying almost everywhere. Keep an eye out for their blue color.
  • Skunk
    • Armadillo, Hennigan’s Stead, Rio Bravo, Warhtington Ranch. Night only.
  • Vulture
    • These will spawn near dead animals and humans. They always spawn after completing a gang hideout.
  • Wild Horse
    • Any unbroken horse found in the wild. Outskirts of Armadillo, Escalera, Great Plains.
  • Wolf
    • Tall Trees, Armadillo, Great Plains

 Axe Master

Complete all Tomahawk challenges.

This is actually a Trophy that was added to the original Red Dead Redemption via DLC. This time, it is part of the base list.

  • Step 1

Buy Tomahawks from the Manzanita General Store. Buy all 20 of them.

  • Step 2
    • The following can be done against civilians. Just make sure to wear the bandana before doing them to prevent losing honor.

Get a kill using a Tomahawk as a melee weapon.

Get a kill by throwing a Tomahawk.

Get a kill with a Tomahawk while on your horse.

  • Step 3

Kill a bird as it is flying with a tomahawk without using Dead Eye.

    • Look for a bird sitting on a branch or on the ground. Aim your tomahawk at it and walk toward it. As you get close, it will start to fly away. Throw your tomahawk at it as soon as it begins to fly away. Hitting a bird mid flight is pretty difficult, but this method makes it easier as the bird is off the ground, but not high up in the air either. The area around Manzanita and Tall Tree is a good location for this.
  • Step 4

5 kills in a row without missing.

    • This can be done on civilians, but it is better to combine this with Step 5 below.
  • Step 5

Complete any hideout only using tomahawks.

    • You can do this with any hideout, but you should be careful of the ones that have an NPC that helps you. If an NPC kills an enemy, it will void this challenge. Every single enemy in a hideout needs to be killed with a tomahawk. Tumbleweed or Twin Rocks make for good locations to get this done.
    • After getting a kill, loot the body and you will recover the tomahawk that you threw.
    • If you complete the challenge but the Trophy doesn’t pop, equip the tomahawks in your weapon wheel and it should then pop. I ran into this issue. A few minutes after completing, I equipped the tomahawks to try again and the Trophy then popped.

 Master Exploder

Complete the Explosive Rifle Challenge.

This is actually a Trophy that was added to the original Red Dead Redemption via DLC. This time, it is part of the base list.

  • Step 1

Buy the Explosive Rifle from the gunsmith in Blackwater.

    • This is very expensive. It’s $10,000 normal price and $5,000 with high honor.
  • Step 2

Use the Explosive Rifle to kill 5 enemies that are behind cover.

    • This can easily be completed by doing a hideout. There are a lot of enemies and they will be taking cover.
  • Step 3

Kill 3 criminals with 1 shot using the Explosive Rifle

    • Do any gang hideout and hogtie 3 enemies. Place them all next to each other and shoot an explosive round at them.
  • Step 4

Kill two animals with 1 shot using the Explosive Rifle

    • Put down some bait and wait for at least 2 animals to come. When they do, fire a shot at them.
  • Step 5

Obtain or change into the US Army uniform and kill an enemy.

    • Details on how to obtain the US Army uniform can be found in the 100% completion guide.

When you have the uniform, equip it and kill any enemy. Civilians will not count for this. If you need to find an enemy, go to any gang hideout.
